Dear Fellow Parents,
I hope that you had a wonderful summer and that you and your children are ready to return refreshed and energized. Bird Rock Elementary’s teachers, administration, and staff and many of the BR Foundation’s volunteers have been working hard to prepare for the coming school year.
Our children are privileged to attend one of the best elementary schools in San Diego. But we also face the challenges of public school budgets and the continuing budget deficits within the SDUSD. The Bird Rock Foundation’s mission focuses on providing enrichment opportunities beyond what public school funding currently can provide. Parent volunteers and their fundraising efforts last year will allow us to fund the following for this school year:
- up to three classroom teachers to reduce classroom sizes
- technology enrichment program and curriculum
- arts (visual, performing and music) enrichment program and supplies
- science supplies
- classroom mini grants (to be used by the teachers for individual classroom needs)
- structured playground and lunchtime supervision, through Playground Partners
- school support programs including school-wide cultural assemblies, family STEAM night, teacher events, family events, Missoula Theater, etc.
The BR Foundation raises money through various events and activities – starting with our annual giving campaign Splash for Cash in the Fall and ending with the 39th Annual Gala and Auction in the Spring. And let’s not forget the Readathon, Scholastic Book Fair, La Jolla Art and Wine Festival, business sponsorships, and, of course, Pizza Wednesday. The BR Foundation also works hard to support BRE as a community of students, parents and school staff. Fall Festival, Family STEAM night, Movie Nights, and Missoula Theater are some of the schoolwide, fun events the BRF organizes and supports.
But we also rely heavily on parent volunteers who contribute many hours to organizing and supporting our events, utilizing their skills to help where needed, bringing their passions and big ideas, and making connections as part of our school community. I hope that every parent can find some way to contribute, big or small, time, money or skills, and in whatever combination works for you. There are many opportunities to contribute and we need you!
Come join our team or learn what’s happening at one (or all) of our monthly Foundation meetings. Our meetings are always held on the second Thursday of each month after drop-off. It’s a great way to meet other parents and become involved in your child’s education! The first meeting of the year will be September 12, 2019 at 8:35 AM in the Auditorium. We look forward to meeting you!
