From the Foundation President

Welcome back!

It’s that time of year again when the lazy days of summer have come to an end and we are beginning a new school year full of promise and opportunity. As this year’s President of the Bird Rock Foundation, I am looking forward to the 2018-19 school year and what lies ahead. I extend a warm welcome to our new Principal, Andi Frost, who brings an abundance of knowledge and experience to our beloved neighborhood school. I would like to thank Andi, the teachers, the staff, and all of the volunteers who worked last year and over the summer in preparation for this year.

San Diego Unified School District has faced many challenges with the budget deficit. Unfortunately, the deficit trend will continue to have an effect on all SDUSD schools, including BRE. As district cutbacks occur, we have to find ways to provide enrichment opportunities for our children outside of what federal, state and local governments are able to provide. This effort begins with our fundraising initiative and is made a reality by those who donate their time, talents and/or money. To enrich the educational experience, the foundation will be funding the following because of last year’s efforts:

  • an extra classroom teacher to reduce classroom sizes
  • science, technology, and the arts (visual, performing and music)
  • classroom mini grants (to be used by the teachers for individual classroom needs)
  • structured playground and lunchtime supervision, through Playground Partners
  • professional development for the talented BRE teachers
  • school support programs including school-wide cultural assemblies, family STEAM night, teacher events, family events, Missoula Theater, etc.
  • capital improvements and campus beautification

Each year, the Bird Rock Foundation and its Executive Board work to 1) achieve the promise of fundraising for the benefit of student and campus enrichment, 2) promote parent involvement, and 3) facilitate parent/teacher/administration communication and education enrichment.

Shortly after the school year begins, we will launch our annual giving campaign, Splash for Cash. In the Spring, we will conclude our main fundraising efforts with the 38th Annual Gala and Auction (a fun event not to be missed).
In between, there will be many other fundraisers including La Jolla Art & Wine Festival, Pizza Wednesday, BRCC Bird Rock Tour of Homes, Scholastic Book Fair & Read-A-Thon, and Business Sponsorship opportunities…just to name a few. We will accomplish great things this year because of the help and support we receive throughout the year from our sponsors, donors, volunteers and the BRE staff and administration. We ask that you do what you can to support our school. Nothing offered is too small!  When you volunteer your time, talent, and/or treasure, you are making a difference in the lives of our young children by investing in their future.

The Foundation makes great effort to reach every family at BRE and to keep you abreast with the latest information. As events and volunteer needs arise, we will be communicating important information through our weekly e-blasts, Tuesday envelopes, our website (, and at the monthly Foundation meetings… which are open to all Foundation members (you!). Attending these meetings and staying informed is one additional way of being involved!

I am incredibly grateful to everyone who has already committed to work throughout this school year in order to enrich our children’s educational experience and I hope to see even more of you joining our committees. Your involvement, in any capacity, is sincerely welcomed. I look forward to a successful 2018-19 school year where our children and families feel they are part of a community and our parents know that their efforts directly impact all children of BRE in a positive and productive manner.
