In conjunction with the Scholastic Book Fair, the Read-A-Thon is a fun, 2-week event that runs from Dec 3 through Dec 16, 2018. This event celebrates the timeless beauty and magic of books, encourages the love of reading, and directly involves all students in fundraising for Bird Rock Foundation. Every pledged dollar keeps our class sizes small, supports campus safety measures, and provides access to innovative science/engineering initiatives and cultural experiences — including international music and art appreciation.

How does it work? During the campaign, students will record the amount of time they spend reading on their reading log each day. They are encouraged to ask their friends, neighbors, and extended family to consider making a pledge for their reading efforts; sponsors can pledge either a flat amount or donate by number of minutes read.

To make it easier for family and friends to support our readers, we are utilizing the traditional pledge methodology along with a web-based fundraising system.  Please register now to help your child raise funds for enrichment programs and unique cultural experiences that broaden the horizons of all students at Bird Rock Elementary School:

  • Go to http://pledgestar.com/birdrock
  • Click “Not Registered For This Year’s Event”
  • Enter your name and email address, then click “Submit”
  • Follow the instructions on-screen to register students

When you finish, the system emails pledge requests to your family and friends, and allows them to make secure credit card donations online. You get notified each time a pledge is made, and you can track your pledge progress online.  You can also use your Pledge Page to record sponsors who wish to donate with cash or checks.

Many times, companies offer corporate giving programs (which means they match employee donations to eligible nonprofits, like Bird Rock Foundation), so please be sure to ask if your sponsor’s employer provides this benefit. Matching gifts can double, triple, and even quadruple donations — which can exponentially aid fundraising efforts. Matching gifts enable companies to help more, allow employees to give more, and let nonprofits do more for those they serve. In this case, that means all of our students!

December 3 – 16:  The challenge is on! Gather up lots of great books, log the minutes you spend reading (or are read to) every day, and engage in a little friendly competition with your friends 🙂

December 17:  Participants will calculate their total minutes, insert the Reading Log + Pledge Form + cash/check donations in the enclosed envelope provided with your Reading Packet, fill out the envelope cover information, and return to their teacher. Their personal Read-A-Thon pledge page will stay active until the end of December, to allow per-minute sponsors to donate the appropriate amount based on reading totals. Students that turn in a completed 2018 Read-A-Thon Packet on time (Dec 17) will receive 1 raffle ticket, plus an additional raffle ticket for every $25 in pledges. Students are encouraged to collect as many raffle tickets as they can to be eligible to win some great prizes!

January 14 – 15, 2019:  Based on final Read-A-Thon pledge totals (online + checks/cash), participants will receive additional raffle tickets in an envelope passed out by teachers on January 14. Raffle prizes will be on display January 14 – 15, with boxes in front of each to collect tickets. Participants can distribute tickets across multiple prizes, or pool all of them towards your favorite — it’s their choice!

January 16, 2019:  The Read-A-Thon Awards Ceremony & Raffle will be held right after morning assembly. Find out who are BRE’s Top Reader and Top Fundraiser! Congratulate the elite members of the “1,000 Minute Club”! And keep your fingers crossed during the Raffle drawings!
