About the Bird Rock Foundation

Mission – The Bird Rock Foundation is organized for the purpose of supporting the education of children at Bird Rock Elementary by fostering relationships among the school, parents, and teachers. We empower communities to work together for children and families through education, leadership, communication and advocacy. We also strive to advance and encourage partnerships and teamwork between parents and teachers through parental education, classroom support and joint undertakings.

The Bird Rock Foundation is our school’s version of a PTA or PTO. The Foundation operates as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. This means we can operate with greater discretion over monies raised and are not subject to state-mandated processes. We, as parents, in collaboration with the school administration can create the kind of learning environment we want for our children. We make this happen by providing financial support for initiatives such as reducing district-prescribed student to teacher ratios, and providing programming that the state and federal government no longer support such as art, P.E., technology and music.

As a parent or guardian of a student at Bird Rock you are automatically a member of the Foundation. The Foundation has a volunteer Executive Board that is comprised of parents elected for a one-year term late each spring for the following school year. While the board meets in closed executive sessions we also hold open meetings to discuss current activities and issues of interest for parents. We hold monthly Foundation meetings on the 2nd Thursday of every month (assuming there are no conflicts). Please come and learn more about what is happening at Bird Rock. We would love to see you!

Our fundraising is designed to reach out to all Bird Rock families and our broader school community. Over the course of the year the Foundation offers families many ways to participate! We respect each and every Bird Rock family, and hope all families participate in a way that is comfortable for them! There are SO MANY ways! Look for the various events over the course of the year.

In addition to the various fundraising events and opportunities, we could not reach our fundraising goal with out the generous contributions to our annual giving campaign, Splash for Cash. Every dollar counts! Whether you are able to donate $10, $100 or even $1000, every dollar donated helps us reach our goal.

Bird Rock Elementary needs your time and talent. Without parent volunteer time, Bird Rock would not be what it is today! Volunteering is just as important to the success of the Foundation in continuing to support Bird Rock as the funds that need to be raised! The Foundation’s mission is to support and enhance the curriculum at Bird Rock Elementary School whenever possible. It is to create strong connections between the school, family, and community. It is the Foundation Board’s sincere hope that as a part of our community you will feel drawn to become involved! The rewards are plentiful for you and your children. Research shows that students who’s parents are involved in their school perform better both academically and socially and are more confident.

There are many ways to stay informed! Please read our weekly e-blasts for important dates and information for the upcoming week. Watch for messages from your Room Representatives, and check out the message board located in the breezeway across from the office. All of these will keep you informed about the “happenings” at Bird Rock.

Our fundraising efforts could not exist without volunteers AND donations. Every dollar donated and every hour volunteered makes a difference and are equally important! Whether you help at an event, make a donation, or are able to do both, our sincere hope is that every family will find a way to participate! By working together there is no limit to what we can accomplish for our children. As much as has been undertaken by the parent volunteers and the Foundation currently, there is always more that can be done. Your suggestions and ideas are always welcome!

About Bird Rock Elementary

Grades: UTK-5
Total Enrollment: Approximately 434
La Jolla Cluster , San Diego Unified School District

Bird Rock Elementary School is located in the Bird Rock area of La Jolla. In addition to our students and their parents, many neighborhood residents feel a strong sense of connection to the school.

Bird Rock opened in 1951 and is situated on four and a half acres, with an additional half-acre access to a portion of San Diego Parks and Recreation property. There are four permanent buildings and nine bungalows. All permanent buildings have been renovated within the last five years. The school is completely surrounded by fencing to ensure a protected environment.

The community of Bird Rock Elementary School actively supports learning and creates opportunities for academic achievement and personal responsibility for all students through a standards-based curriculum that challenges students to rise to their highest potential through inquiry, discovery, and collaboration. Our staff, students, and parents, with the support of our neighborhood community, strive toward a common goal of academic success and the social and emotional well-being of every student.

Thanks to our quality academic program, Bird Rock students are high-achieving. Our STAR results place us among the District’s top-performing elementary schools. Teacher collaboration and strong parent dedication to education contribute to our success.

All students are offered a comprehensive curriculum that focuses on literacy, mathematics and science. Teachers set high expectations, use multiple measures of assessment and take responsibility for student performance. Our grade-level teachers meet weekly to plan and assess student work.
