Bird Rock Elementary relies on Bird Rock Foundation - made up of all BRE Families like you - to help support programs and activities throughout the year. Each year we ask for volunteers to support BRE by donating their time to make the school year as rich as possible for all students. It is an inexpensive way to meet the needs of our school and contribute to your child’s Bird Rock experience. We have many volunteer opportunities, including short and long-term.
Volunteer Requirements
Volunteer Procedure EACH School Year
Parents, family members, and community volunteers MUST complete a Volunteer Application and a Volunteer Code of Conduct (read carefully and sign). Please contact the school office to pick up the volunteer packet or if you have any questions about becoming a volunteer.
The office staff clears volunteers by running a Megan's Law database check once your volunteer application has been received in full. You will receive an email once your application has been processed.
The TB Risk Assessment must to be completed by a licensed healthcare provider. Please have your doctor or the school nurse (available at BRE on Wednesdays) clear your TB compliance. Depending on the results of the assessment, you may need to have a TB Test performed by your doctor.
The TB Risk Assessment is valid for 1 year while the TB test results are valid for 4 years.
Additional Requirements for Field Trip Chaperones
Please talk with the classroom teacher about becoming a chaperone. Field Trip Chaperones have additional paperwork and steps to complete.
- Request to Conduct Volunteer Screening
- Request for Live Scan Service SDUSD Volunteer
- You MUST be Live Scanned specifically for SDUSD; the results are not shared from one entity to another.
- Complete the district's Mandated Reporter course and provide the completion certification.
- Mandated Reporter Training Job Aid (Category C & D volunteers only)
- Starting July 1, 2026, SB 848 requires that all Category C & D volunteers complete mandated reporter training. This job aid walks volunteers through the process of creating a Vector Solutions account and completing the required training.
Those items needed must be provided to the Bird Rock Elementary office at least 8 weeks prior to EACH field trip to allow time for district processing.
Once you have been Live Scanned for SDUSD, you will need to complete this form each year to maintain Category D clearance for field trips. If there is a lapse in volunteering, you may need to reprint.
FIELD TRIPS ARE FOR THE CLASSROOM STUDENTS ONLY. NO SIBLINGS ARE PERMITTED. CHAPERONES RIDE THE BUS OR DRIVE, DEPENDING ON BUS AVAILABILITY.

Lunch and recess supervisor
Want to be more present on campus during the high activity times of the day? BRE needs parent volunteers who are willing to help supervise daily lunch and recess transitions for students. Every day is available for volunteering.

PIZZA WEDNESDAY
Pizza Wednesday is run entirely on parent volunteers and we need your support! Each week is dedicated to a specific class (each class has 2-3 weeks) so the responsibilities can be divided among the whole school. Visit our MTK signup form to view available slots and sign up today!
Pizza Wednesday shifts are split up by class in order to share the load. But please sign up for any day that works for you.

Note that the new signup form is organized by grade and teacher. The form/list is automatically expanded to show all dates, so please do a search for your teacher.
